Born and raised in Japan, I discovered my passion for dance at an early age. At sixteen, I moved to New York on a two-year grant from the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan to pursue professional dance training. After completing my studies at The Ailey School and earning my BFA in Dance from SUNY Purchase, I spent twelve years performing in New York — an experience that continues to shape who I am as both an artist and educator.In recent years, Mao has expanded her artistic work to include choreography, setting pieces for Youth America Grand Prix (YAGP)—one of the world’s leading dance competitions—as well as for other national competitions in Japan.
I began her GYROTONIC® journey in 2010, attending Yoga for Dancers in New York as a way to address injuries and chronic pain resulting from years of rigorous training and performance. Soon after she discovered GYROTONIC® Method provides most profound tools for injury prevention, recovery, rehabilitation, sustainable movement, and holistic body wellness. It is through this practice that she feels most connected to the joy of movement.
Today, I find the greatest fulfillment in sharing the transformative benefits of GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS® with others. Continuously deepening her understanding of the method, she is inspired by its capacity to cultivate balance, vitality, and expressive movement. Her clients range in age from 9 to 85 and include professional dancers, athletes, movement artists, and those on a path of recovery and many more. She has been teaching in multiple places internationally, such as in New York City, Los Angelos, and Tokyo.
She currently serves as a GYROTONIC® Pre-Trainer under Certifying Master Trainer Billy Macagnone, owner of Body Evolution (BE) in New York. She holds certifications in GYROTONIC® Level 2, Therapeutic Applications, Applications for Dancers, and all Specialized Equipment.
